FAQ
What is the Universal Circle
Dedicated to the art of meaningful dialogue, The Universal Circle brings people together to explore the complexities of society, relationships, and philosophy. By hosting our discussions in the casual settings of Butler and Indiana’s favorite bars and cafes, we bridge the gap between deep intellectual inquiry and genuine human connection.
What does the name mean?
“Universal” The Breadth of Inquiry.
The term “Universal” signals that nothing is off-limits. It suggests a “university of the people,” where the curriculum isn’t set by an institution but by the community’s collective interest.
The Big Picture: It covers the “Universal” human experience: philosophy, ethics, society, and relationships.
Inclusivity: It implies a space where everyone is welcome regardless of their background, mirroring the idea of a “universal” truth that can be found in any perspective.
“Circle” The Geometry of Equality
The circle is one of humanity’s oldest symbols for community. Unlike a lecture hall (where one person stands in front) or a boardroom (where someone sits at the head of the table), a circle has no hierarchy.
Equality: Every point on a circle is the same distance from the center. In your group, this means every voice carries equal weight.
Safety & Wholeness: A circle creates a “container” for difficult or deep conversations, offering a sense of protection and mutual respect.
Ancient Tradition: From tribal council fires to Socratic seminars, humans have gathered in circles for millennia to make sense of the world.
The Combination: A Modern “Agora”
By putting them together, The Universal Circle describes a modern version of the ancient Greek Agora, a public space where people gather to discuss the most important “universal” questions of life in a “circle” of friends and neighbors.
Vast ideas explored in an intimate, equal setting.
Do I need to be an expert to present?
Definitely not. Curiosity is the only prerequisite. We believe the best discussions come from everyday people sharing unique ideas. If you can spark an engaging conversation and value diverse viewpoints, we want to hear from you.
What does it cost to participate?
- We believe great conversation should be accessible to all. Most of our discussion events are free to attend, though we typically suggest a small donation to help our facilitators cover materials and location costs. There may be times when we can book a higher-profile presenter, and there may be an event cost for those occasions. For most of our Events and Social Hangouts, just plan to cover your own food, drinks, or activity fees. We’ll always list specific costs in the event details so there are no surprises.
