Come for a Drink, Stay for the Think

Event Types

The Universal Circle hosts periodic gatherings at local bars, pubs, or eateries to foster philosophical discussion in a relaxed, secular environment. While we meet in social venues, our focus is not on the alcohol, but on creating a space where attendees can eat, drink, and engage in meaningful, structured conversation. Each gathering moves from social connection to a moderated inquiry into the night’s topic.

Meetings

Meetings are formal, with a presenter and open discussion afterwards.

Meeting “Flow”

  • The Social: Arrival, ordering drinks/food, informal chat. No rules of discourse yet.
  • The Opening Orientation: A local Moderator (title TBD) will open the meeting with housekeeping rules, expectations, and an introduction to the evening’s topic or speaker.
  • The Inquiry: The featured speaker will present for 45 to 60 minutes.
  • The After-Talk: The Moderator will facilitate a group dialogue and Q&A session following the talk.
  • Duration: Meetings are scheduled for 60 to 90 minutes. We value your time and aim to stay strictly on schedule.

Technical & Accessibility Needs

  • Audio/Visual: While a screen is ideal, it is not mandatory and depends on the venue. However, a sound system is highly recommended to ensure clarity over ambient noise without being overbearing.

  • Accessibility: We encourage hiring American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters when local need exists to ensure our discussions are inclusive.

Hangouts are informal, casual gatherings for meetups, game nights, hikes, and other group-organized activities.

We are currently forming groups in Butler and Indiana, PA.
